Ayurveda for April: spring allergies, CCF tea, and how a grapefruit breakfast helps Kapha

Susan Bass on Ayurveda's April practices: how to handle spring allergies and hay fever, CCF tea, draining vegetables, dry brushing, and the broiled grapefruit breakfast.

April symptoms can include a runny nose, itchy eyes (often due to trapped heat from the winter), rashes, and sore throats. This is the season when Kaphas suffer most from respiratory issues and the congestive conditions people are prone to in the spring: hay fever and head colds. Ayurveda's April practices address all of it through the diet and spices: rose water on the face, cooling water on the eyes, pungent spices to break up mucus, draining vegetables to support the liver, and a broiled grapefruit breakfast that Kaphas love.

Why April symptoms show up (and what they actually are)

April symptoms are often the body releasing trapped heat from the winter. A runny nose flushes out what built up. Itchy eyes are often that trapped heat finding an exit. Rashes are the skin doing the same job. Sore throats are the respiratory channel registering the shift.

In Ayurveda, the gunas of April are heavy, dull, gross, and gooey. The remedy is to bring in the opposite qualities: sharp, warming, penetrating.

What to do for the April symptoms (rose water, eye splash, spices)

The simple remedies Susan teaches:

  • Rose water spray on the face. Cooling, gentle, anti-inflammatory for skin reactions.
  • Cooling water splash on the eyes. A few times a day. Reduces the itch and the redness.
  • Wild bitter greens growing in your area. Chickweed, dandelion greens, shepherd's purse. The greens that come up on their own carry the prana you need for spring.

Which pungent spices break up April mucus

Pungent spices specialize in breaking up mucus when taken in the right amount. Susan's April list:

  • Ceylon cinnamon
  • Green cardamom seeds
  • Ajwain
  • Caraway
  • Cumin
  • Black pepper

Use them in soups, teas, and porridges. They cut through the dampness from the inside.

What CCF tea is, and how to dose it

CCF tea is cumin, coriander, fennel. Whole seeds, not powder. The whole seeds separate the pure from the turbid. CCF tea is a detoxifying diuretic to flush the excess water from the body in spring.

The dosing rule Susan teaches:

  • Vata and Pitta. Should not do more than one cup a day.
  • Kapha. With an excess of water, can do well with two cups.

Always err on moderation.

Which vegetables drain the April dampness

These vegetables drain dampness and support a spring liver flush in a gentle way:

  • Kohlrabi
  • Fennel bulb
  • Watercress
  • Chard
  • Radicchio
  • Lettuce
  • Beet greens
  • Endive
  • Celery. The one thing people can juice with a little ginger and apple in spring.

Why dry brushing and sweating matter in April

Garshana (dry brushing) and sweating both move the lymph and release the dampness through the skin. Susan teaches that April is a great month to do both daily.

Pair the dry brushing with abhyanga afterward. The brushing exfoliates and stimulates the lymph; the oil seals the skin and feeds the microbiome.

How to keep the nose oiled in April

Keep the nose oiled with nasya oil. It keeps the mucus membranes from being too overreactive and overstimulated by creating a barrier between the irritants and the membrane.

This is one of the simplest practices for spring allergies and one that people skip because it feels strange the first time. Susan teaches: do it daily.

What the broiled grapefruit breakfast is

April is grapefruit season. The Kapha breakfast Susan teaches:

  • Slice the grapefruit into four long slices with the skin still on.
  • Keep the pith and the rind on.
  • Broil it for two to three minutes, until it gets a little warm.
  • Drizzle with raw honey and fresh ground cardamom and ginger after the broil.

The raw honey has to go on after the broil. Heating raw honey changes its properties and Ayurveda treats heated honey as a different substance.

This is a great Kapha breakfast. Warming, bitter (from the rind), with the digestive spices to set up the day.

Frequently asked questions

What causes April allergies in Ayurveda?

Trapped heat from winter that the body is now trying to release. The runny nose, itchy eyes, rashes, and sore throats are the channels doing their job, but the imbalance of damp Kapha makes them overreact. Pungent spices, draining vegetables, and the right April practices give the trapped heat a clean exit.

What is CCF tea, and how much should I drink?

CCF is cumin, coriander, fennel. Whole seeds, boiled into tea. It is a detoxifying diuretic that flushes excess spring water. Vata and Pitta should not do more than one cup a day; Kapha with an excess of water can do two cups. Err on moderation.

What spices break up mucus in spring?

Ceylon cinnamon, green cardamom seeds, ajwain, caraway, cumin, and black pepper. Pungent spices that specialize in cutting through mucus. Use them in soups, teas, and porridges.

How do I do the broiled grapefruit breakfast?

Slice grapefruit into four long slices with the skin, pith, and rind on. Broil two to three minutes until warm. After the broil (not before), drizzle with raw honey and freshly ground cardamom and ginger. The honey has to go on after; heated honey changes its properties in Ayurveda.

Why oil the nose in spring?

Nasya oil creates a barrier between irritants and the mucus membranes, which keeps the membranes from being too overreactive. It is one of the simplest spring allergy practices and one people skip because it feels strange at first. Do it daily.
